- Bastet, also known as Bast, was an ancient Egyptian goddess worshipped principally in Bubastis, located in the Nile Delta. Originating in the Old Kingdom, she was initially depicted as a lioness, reflecting her fierce and protective nature. Over time, with the rise of domestic cats in Egypt, her image softened into that of a woman with the head of a domestic cat, symbolizing grace, fertility, and protection. Bastet was associated with home, women’s secrets, childbirth, and fertility, and was also seen as a protective deity against evil spirits and disease. Her cult gained prominence during the Middle Kingdom and flourished in the New Kingdom, with extensive festivals celebrating her nurturing yet vigilant character. Bastet’s dual nature—as both a gentle protector and a fierce avenger—embodies the multifaceted roles she played in the lives of her devotees.
