- The Ark of the Covenant is a sacred chest in Jewish and Christian traditions believed to house the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, which were given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. According to the Hebrew Bible, the Ark was constructed by the Israelites under the guidance of Moses and was made of acacia wood, overlaid with gold. It also contained Aaron’s rod and a pot of manna. The Ark was kept in the innermost sanctum of the Tabernacle during the Israelites’ travels in the wilderness and later placed in the Holy of Holies within Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Its last known location was before the Babylonian conquest, after which its fate remains a subject of mystery and speculation. The Ark symbolizes God’s covenant with the people of Israel and His presence among them.
