- Padre Pio, born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887, and canonized as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, was an Italian Capuchin friar and mystic renowned for his piety, charity, and the stigmata wounds that he bore for much of his life, which allegedly mirrored those of Christ’s crucifixion. He gained a massive following for his deep spirituality, ability to hear confessions for long hours, and reputed miraculous healings and bilocations. Despite skepticism and medical scrutiny, his enduring legacy includes the establishment of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (House for the Relief of Suffering), a major hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002 and remains a symbol of faith and compassion for many Catholics worldwide.
