- The Lady of Guadalupe, also known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a Catholic title of the Virgin Mary associated with a venerated image enshrined within the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The basilica is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. The image of the Virgin Mary on a cloak came from an event in 1531 when, according to tradition, a Native American man named Juan Diego encountered a vision of the Virgin Mary on a hill called Tepeyac near Mexico City. The Virgin Mary asked for a shrine to be built in her honor. When Juan Diego reported this to the archbishop, he was initially dismissed. After subsequent visions, the Virgin Mary instructed Juan Diego to collect roses in his cloak and present them to the archbishop as a sign. When Juan Diego delivered these, an image of the Virgin Mary was miraculously imprinted on his cloak. This image has been housed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe ever since.
